Couples Intensives: Make Meaningful Change in Your Relationship

Ready to break old patterns and find your way back to each other?

Sometimes, weekly therapy doesn't feel like enough. Or maybe you’re unable to make time for weekly sessions and prefer to do months of work in a weekend. You may be caught in painful cycles of conflict, struggling to rebuild trust, wondering whether your relationship can be saved, or longing to feel close to each other again. A couples intensive gives you dedicated time and space to slow down, understand what's happening between you, and begin making meaningful changes.

At WholeHeart Counseling, our couples intensives draw on Relational Life Therapy (RLT) to help couples understand the patterns that keep them stuck and develop healthier ways of relating. Rather than focusing only on communication techniques, we help you explore the deeper dynamics beneath your conflicts, recognize how each partner contributes to the relationship's difficulties, and practice new ways of showing up for yourself and each other.

Our goal is to help you move beyond understanding what needs to change and begin putting that change into practice.

Choose the Couples Intensive That Fits Your Needs

We offer several intensive formats, depending on your goals, schedule, and therapist availability.

Half-Day Intensive — 3 Hours

A focused opportunity to explore a specific relationship concern, identify recurring patterns, and begin practicing new ways of communicating and reconnecting. A half-day intensive provides more time for meaningful therapeutic work than a typical session while keeping the commitment manageable.

Full-Day Intensive — 5 Hours

A deeper opportunity to explore longstanding challenges, work through difficult conversations, and practice new relational skills with your therapist's guidance. The extended time allows you to look beneath the surface of recurring conflicts and begin developing new ways of responding to one another.

Two-Day Weekend Intensive — 10 Hours

For couples seeking a more immersive experience, our two day intensive is scheduled over two consecutive days, Friday and Saturday, with five hours of therapy each day. This format provides additional time to explore complex relationship patterns, address significant hurts, and practice new ways of relating, with an opportunity to reflect between sessions.

Each intensive is tailored to your relationship and the goals you bring to therapy. While concentrated work can create opportunities for meaningful progress, every couple's experience is different, and an intensive cannot guarantee that every concern will be resolved in a single experience.

What Makes Our Approach Different?

At WholeHeart Counseling, we believe meaningful relationship change involves more than learning better communication skills. It requires understanding the patterns that create distance, recognizing the ways we protect ourselves when we feel hurt or threatened, and learning to respond differently.

Relational Life Therapy (RLT) emphasizes personal responsibility, emotional honesty, compassion, and accountability. With your therapist's support, you'll explore the dance you get caught in as a couple, recognize your part in keeping it going, and learn how to interrupt painful cycles rather than repeat them.

Your intensive may include personal reflection with your partner present, guided conversations, and opportunities to practice new skills together in real time. You'll work on expressing yourself more honestly, listening with greater empathy, repairing hurt, establishing healthy boundaries, and rebuilding connection.

We also recognize that a healthy relationship with yourself is an important part of building a healthy relationship with your partner. Our work supports both personal growth and the shared responsibility of creating a relationship in which both partners can feel heard, respected, and connected.

We recognize five dimensions of intimacy: physical, emotional, sexual, intellectual, and spiritual. Depending on your needs and goals, your intensive may explore one or more of these areas.

Integrating Christian Faith and Relationships Faith can be an important source of meaning, hope, and guidance in a relationship. For couples who desire it, we welcome the opportunity to integrate a Christian perspective into the therapeutic process.

Together, you may explore how your faith informs your understanding of commitment, forgiveness, grace, truthfulness, accountability, and love. We believe these values can support the work of building a healthier relationship while recognizing that genuine repair also requires honesty, responsibility, mutual respect, and meaningful change.

Whether you want faith to be central to your therapy or prefer to focus on your relationship without a spiritual emphasis, our goal is to meet you where you are and help you work toward a more connected, resilient relationship.

Who Can Benefit from a Couples Intensive?

A couples intensive may be a good fit if you:

  • Are questioning the future of your relationship and want to explore whether healing and rebuilding are possible.
  • Love each other and remain committed to your relationship but feel stuck in recurring arguments, resentment, or emotional disconnection.
  • Are struggling with trust, intimacy, or unresolved hurt.
  • Want to deepen your emotional, physical, sexual, intellectual, or spiritual connection.
  • Feel as though you've tried everything but keep falling into the same painful patterns.
  • Are ready to look honestly at your own responses, take responsibility for your part in relationship difficulties, and practice new ways of relating. Couples intensives are designed for focused therapeutic work rather than ongoing weekly counseling. They may be particularly helpful when both partners are willing to engage in the process and devote concentrated time to their relationship.

An intensive may not be the best fit if you're experiencing an ongoing crisis, need regular therapeutic support, or are not ready to participate in focused relationship work. Your therapist can help you determine whether an intensive or another form of care would better meet your needs.

Safety matters. When a relationship involves fear, coercive control, or intimate partner violence, a standard couples intensive may not be appropriate. Individual screening and careful assessment are important to determine whether joint therapy can be conducted safely and whether a different approach is needed.

Take the Next Step Toward a Healthier Relationship

You don't have to keep repeating the same patterns without understanding how to change them. A couples intensive offers dedicated time to gain insight, practice new ways of relating, and begin building the kind of relationship you want.

Intensive formats, scheduling, and fees vary by therapist.
